How to Review and Delete Spam Emails in Gmail
Open Gmail’s Spam folder and check for legitimate mail before using its delete-all-spam control. That action permanently removes the selected spam rather than giving it a new period in Trash. If unwanted mail is still in your inbox, use Report spam instead of merely hiding it.
Check false positives first
Look for expected password resets, invoices, unfamiliar contacts and other messages you need. Move legitimate messages out of Spam using Not spam before clearing the folder. A familiar display name alone does not establish that an email is genuine; inspect the sender and context.
Automatic removal and manual removal
Gmail normally removes messages after they have spent 30 days in Spam. You can wait for that process or deliberately remove reviewed spam earlier. Permanent removal ends ordinary recovery. Avoid rushing through the folder solely to reduce its unread badge.
Mail that keeps returning
Use Report spam on unwanted inbox messages. For legitimate subscriptions you no longer want, use Gmail’s unsubscribe or Manage subscriptions controls. Blocking routes future mail from an address to Spam; it does not prevent the sender from trying to deliver it.
If storage is the concern
Google includes Spam and Trash in storage usage until their contents are permanently removed. Check the storage overview rather than assuming that spam volume means a large space saving. For a larger diagnostic, see the storage review workflow.
Keep the action limited
Sender-wide extension cleanup is a poor fit when the same sender carries records or messages you must keep. Use the focused native controls described here. Read the extension’s broader scope and limits.
Choose the next step
Clean up Gmail with the Chrome extension
Rank senders, select the ones you want to clear, and move their emails to Trash. Mail in Trash is normally recoverable for up to 30 days unless permanently removed sooner.
